The role of nutrition in prevention and supportive therapy of equine asthma
Equine asthma and particularly severe equine asthma are commonly diagnosed diseases in adult horses. Exacerbations are triggered mostly by inhalation of environmental allergens that are most commonly found in hay, but also in other feed and bedding. The disease is incurable, so the use of all potentially helpful methods is required. The diet is a modifiable environmental factor that has a significant impact on the homeostasis of the organism. The aim of the study was to analyze selected components of the diet that could be useful in prevention and supportive therapy of equine asthma. Taking into account the nature of the disease, as well as the medical history and clinical condition of the patient, the effects of treatment can be improved by selecting appropriate feed and supplements. The most important components of a diet suitable for asthmatic horses include high quality, not dusty hay or haylage, antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids.
