Legal conditions, the epizootic situation and frame program for the eradication of Aujeszky’'s disease in Poland
In the paper legal conditions that would enable the recognition of Aujeszky'’s disease as a disease requiring mandatory eradication in Poland are presented. The necessity of undertaking this decision resulted from legal regulations that are in force in the European Union (EU). A lack of those regulations stand in the way of pig export from Poland and conversely facilitate pig import to our country from other EU Member States. Such a situation could be a potential source of important economic losses for the whole pig sector in Poland. In the article results of serological monitoring conducted in the author’s laboratory since 1990 are presented. Although a limited number of serum samples were available, it could be demonstrated that in the last years seropositive pigs were found in 93.75% of the voievodships. Moreover, the infection rate (the percentage of serologically positive pigs) within the pig population in the country varied from 0.44% to 4.61%. Taking into account what was mentioned above, the author’s proposition of an Aujeszky’'s disease eradication frame program in Poland is presented. It is assumed that this program wiould be divided into 3 phases: phase 1 – preparation, phase 2 – serological monitoring, and phase 3 – eradication of Aujeszky'’s disease (mandatory herd cleanup). The proposed program could be implemented in one region as well as in the whole country.
