Bacteria in the state of VBNC – a threat to human health
Bacteria in the state of VBNC are alive, but do not undergo division and do not grow on solid media. The transition of bacteria into the state of VBNC results from: the influence of physical or chemical factors exerted on them, ageing, differentiation, adjustment, self-destruction of metabolic, lysogeny. Discovering bacteria that was alive, but unable to grow, showed the imperfection of traditional culturing methods and the necessity of using new diagnostic techniques. In the light of the presented data, the standard culturing methods should be supplemented with selected genetic methods. If they are present in processed food, pasteurized milk or drinking water, bacteria in the state of VBNC may constitute a threat to human health.
