Methods useful in the evaluation of specific cell-mediated immunity
In the era of the excessive use of chemotherapeutics, especially antibiotics and an increase of bacterial strains resistance, studies concerning the stimulation of the immune system and evaluation of its activity seem to be particularly important. This article presents a review of the methods useful in the evaluation of cellular immunity. The evaluation of specific cell-mediated immunity may be performed in vivo or in vitro. Delayed-type hypersensitivity assay is one that is possible to make in vivo, while the lymphocyte transformation test, cytometric proliferation assay, evaluation of activation marker expression and analysis of antigen-specific production of cytokines by sensitive lymphocytes T are methods performed in vitro. The evaluation of cell-mediated immunity in immunological studies, especially concerning vaccinology, will be valuable or even essential elements of an experiment.
