Bone sarcomas of cats’ hip joint area
The aim of this paper was to present the treatment results of 2 cats, castrated males 7 and 4 years old, of Persian and European races, in which a malignant neoplasm of bone in the area of the hip joint was diagnosed. In the case of the first cat a hind limb-sparing surgery was performed. The operation was limited to the excision of the femoral head and neck as well as the acetabulum with a neoplastic disorder. The surgical treatment was assisted by chemotherapy, achieving good clinical effects and a relatively long period of the animal’s life (17 months). Owing to the location of tumor (femoral neck) in the case of the second cat, the leg amputation and a wide excision of the acetabulum and part of the pelvis were performed. During a 12-month postoperative observation the recurrence of the disease was not observed. The achieved effects of the surgical procedure produced good results of the primary malignant tumor treatment of the hip area in cats. In the authors’ opinion, the treatment method applied in the case of the first cat, consisting in the excision of the femoral head, neck and acetabulum, is the first report of such a limb-sparing surgery in cats. Good results of this treatment method encourage to perform further surgeries of this kind.
