Dogs erlichiosis on the own case light
|

In April 2008 the two years old dog of the leonberg race with symptoms of apathy, los of appetite and with the temperature 40,1°C came to the Veterinary Polyclinic of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn The haematologic examinations showed the slight thrombocytopenia, and performed routinely blood smear toward the presence of Babesia canis, gave the negative result. In spite of the use of antipyretic and antibiotic, the condition of the patient get worse in the following twenty-four hours. The blood tests performed again showed deepening thrombocytopenia, worsering of red-blood cell indicators and increase of an activity of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, as well as the level of urea and creatinin. The repeated blood smear toward B. canis gave positive result at that time.Treatment toward babesiosis was taken including application of imidocarb, intravenous infusions and medicines supporting diuresis. In the following days the condition of the dog relapsed in spite of treatment. Additionally symptoms appeared like : difficult breathing, serous nostril and conjunctival outflow, fall of body mass, pallor of mucous membranes, vomiting, reluctance to movement and the deepening dyspnoe. Blood examinations showed growing leukocytosis and granulocytosis and RBC, HGB, HCT and PLT levels remaining considerably below physiological norms. In blood smear performed again the presence of blue colouring indusion bodies in single monocytes was observed, which were identified as the morula of Ehrlichia canis. The diagnosis was confirmed with the immunochromatographic test. As the treatment the oxytetracycline in the intravenous application was used, after 7 days replaced by the doxycycline given orally through 5 weeks. The patient’s condition also required application of the full tinned blood, as well as the usage of intravenous infusions and diuretic through several days. During five days from the beginning of the therapy with tetracyclines the clinical condition of the dog and the blood examinations results were strongly improved and came back to physiological norm in the period of two weeks from the end of antibiotic therapy.
