| Alphacoronavirus and Deltacoronavirus and diarrheal diseases of pigs caused by these viruses |
| The characterization of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) caused by Porcine Alphacoronavirus (PEDV),
followed by a short description of Porcine Deltacoronavirus infection, is presented. The occurrence of PED
is given, mentioning Europe in the period 1970-1990 including sporadic outbreaks later, Asia – starting since
the 90-ties until now, and the Americas, particularly USA, since 2013. The characteristics of PEDV are given,
followed by the text concerning infection and pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, anatomical changes, laboratory
diagnosis, presence in matrices, prevention and control. In the description of the Porcine Deltacoronavirus
(PDCoV), its first detection in Hong Kong in 2012 is mentioned, followed by its identification in the beginning
of 2014 and later in the USA, Canada and China. Based on the currently available field observation from the
USA the opinion is existing, that PDCoV infection would have a lower impact than PED. Diagnostic tests are
in the final stage of validation. When more broadly applied they will contribute to better knowledge about the
importance of PDCoV infection in the swine production. |
