The proposed article presents the biography of Jerzy Fortunat Witowicz (1799-1853), a professor of veterinary medicine and a practicing physician of veterinary medicine, a graduate of the Universities of Vilnius and Vienna. He was among the first Polish teachers to train the first veterinarians at the Medical and Surgical Academy in Vilnius. The publication was prepared on the basis of unique archival sources stored in the funds of the Lithuanian State Historical Archive and the collections of the Museum Complex of the State Biotechnological University in Kharkiv. On the basis of the processed documents, his professional activities were recreated, facts were added to his family life, and his role as a teacher was revealed. It was established that Jerzy Witowicz, along with the director of the Kharkiv Veterinary School, Napoleon Halytsky, were its first professors, as well as the creators of veterinary education and science in Kharkiv and this part of Eastern Europe in general.
