| Professor Napoleon Halitsky (1818-1881) - founder of the Kharkiv Veterinary School, outstanding scientist and practicing veterinarian |
| This article presents a portrait of the eminent Pole, Professor Napoleon Halitsky (1818-1881), a talented creator of the veterinary education and science system in Kharkiv and Eastern Europe, founder of the Kharkiv Practical Veterinary School (1839) as a department of Kharkiv University, and the Kharkiv Veterinary School (1850) – the city’s second higher educational institution. The article is based on archival sources, previously unknown in Poland, preserved in the collections of the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius and the Archive of digitized periodicals of the Central Scientific Library of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. The authors emphasize that alongside organizational activities and years of service as director of the Kharkiv Veterinary School, Napoleon Halitsky was engaged in scientific research, being an outstanding European scientist, seeking ways to overcome infectious diseases in cattle in the mid-19th century. He was a respected and authoritative scholar of his time, deserving of recognition by future generations. |
