| Professor Karol Klaudiusz Wiszniewski (1805-1863): 220th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the Practical Veterinary School in Kharkiv |
| This article presents the biography of the prominent Polish scholar, Professor Karol Klaudiusz Wisniewski (1805-1863), a co-founder of veterinary education in Left-Bank Ukraine and Eastern Europe in general, as well as the first director of the Practical Veterinary School in Kharkiv. The article is based on unique archival sources and manuscript collections preserved in the State Archive of the Vinnytsia Region, the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków, the Library of Vilnius University, the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, and the Digital Archive of Periodicals of the Central Scientific Library of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. The authors conclude that Karol Wisniewski was one of the most outstanding professors of veterinary medicine, effectively combining teaching and organizational work with scientific research. He became the author of an innovative idea for cattle insurance and was also among the first scientists in Eastern Europe to address the issue of combating cattle plague. |
