| Probiotics in feed additives |
| Probiotics are live microorganisms, which when ingested in a sufficient amount have a positive effect on the health of the host, going beyond the nutritional effects commonly known. Probiotics may be effective through a nutritional and/or health or sanitary effect. Microorganisms used in animal feed in the EU are mainly bacterial strains of Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the types Bacillus, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Pedicoccus, Streptococcus and strains of yeast belonging to the Saccharomyces and Kluveromyces.
This article presents a review of the literature on the application of probiotics in animal nutrition, the mode of action of probiotics and the current legislation in the European Union on probiotics feed additives, including the requirements for the safety assessment for the target animal species.
