| Analysis of poisonings in dogs and cats – ten years΄ retrospective studies in material of Department of Toxicology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Wroclaw |
| 134 cases of sudden falling of dogs and cats were analysed, diagnosed as poisonings on the basis of toxicological interview, and autopsy studies, carried out in the years 2003-2012 in Department of Toxicology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Wroclaw. Most of samples to the toxicological test came from local doctors (42%), and the other are the tests made after the autopsy in Department of Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Medicine (33%) as well as on order of government services (25%). Toxicological studies confirmed that poisonings were concerned dogs first of all, which have very often contact with preparations including bromadiolone (25 cases) and first generations coumarins – warfarin and coumatetralyl (13 cases). There also were poisonings caused by consumption of carbamates and phosphorus- organic compounds including in their constitution mainly organically combined nitrogen (37 cases). Sporadic poisoning by zinc phosphide and cyanides were connected with using them as a component of baits (7 cases). The results may be on the one hand guidance and assistance for clinicians to implement appropriate therapeutic management and are an attempt to answer, which toxic substances contribute most to the accidental or intentional poisonings of these animals. It seems also necessary to create a national system of registration of poisonings in animals. |
